Apiary Setup for Pollination and Honey

Beekeeping isn't about the kit. It's about placing hives where they actually pollinate, pulling honey without wrecking the colony, and meeting AS/NZS standards. The rest is budget, tools, and the legal bits - the practical stuff that decides whether your apiary works or not.

“After losing my first twelve colonies to the Tassie damp, I learned that raising hives two metres off the ground is the only way to survive our wet winters.”

Apiary Setup for Pollination and Honey

Twelve acres in Tassie gives you room to run a proper apiary. I've kept bees long enough now to know what actually drives pollination, what fills the supers, and where the AS/NZS standards trip you up. What follows is the kit list, honest budget ranges, and the legal bits that matter on a small holding.

Siting, Stocking, and Seasonal Timing

Setting Up the Hives

  1. Research local beekeeping laws and obtain necessary permits.
  2. Buy 2-4 starter hives (AUD $500–$1,000) from Bunnings or Jaycar.
  3. Install hives in a sunny, sheltered area with access to water.
  4. Monitor hive health weekly and inspect for pests (varroa mites).
  5. Harvest honey in late autumn (March–April) using a centrifugal extractor.
