“After blowing a $400 battery in week one from a faulty isolator, I learned never to trust a direct alternator connection without a proper DC-DC charger.”

Forget the fancy stuff. If you're running a van, ute, or off-grid setup in Australia, your alternator isn't just for the car battery. It's your main power source. But do it wrong and you'll fry your house batteries. Here's how to do it right.
Without an isolator, your alternator will drain your house batteries while you're driving, then try to charge your car battery from the house bank. It's a mess. An isolator lets the alternator charge both your car and house batteries simultaneously.
Two types:
Australian Suppliers: 4WD (VSRs from $149), Aurora Electronics (premium VSRs from $220). No need for $500 "marine" brands – they're overpriced.
Your alternator's regulator is garbage for house batteries. It's set for 12V car batteries, not your 12V/24V deep cycle house bank. You need a dedicated regulator.
Options:
Australian Suppliers: Aurora Electronics (Victron Smart 12/24V from $320), 4WD (Renogy regulators from $280). Skip the $100 "no-name" stuff – it'll kill your batteries.
Thick cables. No excuses. Your alternator can push 100A+ – use 4AWG or bigger. Thin wires = melted connectors = fire.
Steps:
Practical Tip: Wire your isolator before your house battery bank. If you put it after, the alternator won't charge the house bank when you're driving. Basic, but people mess this up.
For a standard 12V off-grid setup (e.g., 2x 100Ah AGM batteries):
Total: ~$500. Not $1,000. Stop overpaying.
Don't Do This: "I'll just connect the alternator to my house bank." You'll drain your car battery while driving, then the alternator will overcharge your house bank. Your batteries die in 6 months. It's not worth the $20 you save.
Alternator charging is simple if you don't overcomplicate it. Get a VSR, get a smart regulator, use thick wires. No "premium" brands. Australian suppliers have everything you need. Do it right once, and your off-grid life runs smooth for years.
