“After a bushfire scare in 2019, I learned that 35mm² copper bus bars are the only thing stopping a $15,000 inverter from melting down in a heatwave.”

Ampacity: Size It Right or Burn It Out

Don't guess. Don't hope. Calculate your max current draw. If your system does 100A, you need a bus bar rated for 100A+.

Real talk: I've seen people use 25mm² bars on 100A systems. They called me "crazy" until their shed smoked. Don't be that bloke.

Mounting: Secure It or Lose It

Bus bars aren't decoration. They need to be bolted down like a bloody brick. Loose connections = sparks. Sparks = fire.

Australian supplier: Jaycar (Model: $18.95 for 50mm² x 300mm bus bar). Get the 50mm² version. It's the sweet spot for most 100A systems.

Corrosion Protection: Rust Kills Off-Grid

Australia's humidity and salt air will eat your bus bars alive if you don't protect them. Tinned copper is non-negotiable.

Pro tip: RS Australia sells tinned bus bars (e.g., 50mm², $32.50). Worth every cent. Don't buy the cheap copper ones from the hardware store.
Final word: If you're using a bus bar that's not tinned, you're already losing. Replace it. Now. Your insurance won't cover a fire from a rusty bus bar.
⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Working with electrical systems, structural modifications, or gas installations carries inherent risks. If you are not confident in your abilities, always engage a licensed professional.
