“After losing three tonnes of barley to mould in my dark Tasmanian shed, I learned that light is the only true harvest.”

Off-Grid Fodder: Barley Sprouts, Light & Harvest (No Fluff)

Look, if you're off-grid in Australia and want to feed livestock without buying hay, this is how. Barley sprouts are the easiest, fastest fodder. No fancy tech. Just barley, water, and a bit of sun.

Look, if you're off-grid in Australia and want to feed livestock without buying hay, this is how. Barley sprouts are the easiest, fastest fodder. No fancy tech. Just barley, water, and a bit of sun.

Barley Sprouts: The Basics

Use raw barley (not malted). You need 20kg bags. Don't waste money on "fodder barley" – regular barley works. Australian suppliers:

Rural Stores (online): $18 for 20kg bag (delivery $15-25). Best value.

Local Co-op (e.g., in regional NSW/Vic): $22 for 20kg. Cash only, no delivery.

Soak 2kg barley in 10L water for 12 hours. Drain. Spread 1cm thick on trays. Rinse 3x daily. Done. Takes 5-7 days.

Lighting: Don't Overcomplicate It

Full sun? Perfect. If indoors, use a $20 LED strip (Jaycar, part #C1300) on a timer. 12 hours on, 12 off. No need for expensive grow lights. If it's dark, your sprouts will turn yellow and die. Simple.

Harvest: When to Cut

Harvest when shoots are 5-7cm tall. That's day 5-7. Cut at the base with scissors. Don't wait – they get tough. Feed immediately or store in fridge for 2 days max. Don't let them dry out.

Blunt tip: If you see mould (white fuzz), throw it out. Don't risk it. Rinse trays with vinegar water (1 part vinegar, 3 parts water) daily to stop mould. Cheap and works.

Practical Tips (What Actually Happens)

What Goes Wrong (And How to Fix It)

Barley not sprouting? Water too cold. Use tap water, not rainwater. Too hot? Move trays to shade. Sprouts turning yellow? Not enough light. Move to sun or add the $20 LED strip.

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
