Forget the fancy aquaculture brochures. Silver perch (Bidyanus bidyanus) is the only fish that'll actually feed your family on a solar-powered setup. No bullshit, just results.

Pond system loop: grow-out pond feeding an aeration pump, feed store and harvest tank.
Water Quality: Don't Be a Dumbass
Get this wrong and you lose everything. Simple as that.
pH: 7.0-8.5. Test weekly with a $15 test kit from Aquatic Supplies. If it's outside this, dump 200g of garden lime per 1000L. Done.
Ammonia: Must be ZERO. Use a $25 API test kit. If it's over 0.25mg/L, do a 30% water change immediately. No excuses.
Temperature: 20-28°C. Below 18°C and they stop eating. Above 30°C and they die. Use a $10 solar-powered thermometer. If it's too hot, shade the tank with chicken wire and wet burlap.
Tip: Never use tap water. Chlorine kills fish. Always treat with $8 dechlorinator from Bunnings. One cap per 100L.
Feeding: Cheap and Simple
Don't waste money on fancy pellets. Silver perch are opportunistic eaters.
What to feed:
Commercial pellets: $15 for 5kg bag (Aqua King, available at Fishbowl).
Leftover kitchen scraps: Cooked rice, boiled eggs, dead insects. No dairy, no onions.
How much: 2% of body weight daily. For 100 fish averaging 200g, that's 400g of food. Feed once a day at dawn.
Don't overfeed: If food sits on the bottom after 5 minutes, you've given too much. Waste = ammonia = death.
Tip: Make your own pellets. Mix 50% fishmeal (from fish scraps), 30% rice bran, 20% wheat. Press into pellets. Costs $0.50 per kg vs $15 for store-bought.
Growth Rates: How Fast You Eat
These fish grow like weeds if you don't screw up.
0-3 months: From 5g to 200g. Feed 5% body weight daily. Grow out in 1m x 1m tanks.
3-6 months: 200g to 800g. Switch to 2% daily. Move to 2m x 2m ponds.
6-12 months: 800g to 1.5kg. Ready for harvest. That's 12 months from fingerling to dinner plate.
Supplier tip: Get fingerlings from Silver Perch Australia. $0.50 per fingerling (min 100). They ship cold packs for $15.
Real Talk: What Actually Works Off-Grid
No point in fancy pumps. We use gravity flow from a rainwater tank. 1000L tank = 10m² of pond. Solar pump for aeration (12V, $220 from Solar Buddy).
Cost to start: $500 for 100 fingerlings + tank + basic gear. Harvest 100 fish at 1kg each = $300 in food value. You're ahead in 6 months.
When to Call a Professional
While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:
Electrical work beyond basic 12V DC additions — requires a licensed electrician
Structural modifications to buildings or load-bearing elements
Gas line installation or modification
Solar array installations above safe voltage thresholds
Any work that affects the structural integrity of your property
Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
