“I lost three days of drinking water in the outback because I sized my UV unit for the river's average flow, not the silt-choked flood.”

UV Steriliser Sizing: Off-Grid Aussie Guide (No Fluff)

Look, if you're off-grid in Australia and using a UV steriliser, you're not messing around. But if you size it wrong? You're drinking raw sewage. Let's fix that.

Look, if you're off-grid in Australia and using a UV steriliser, you're not messing around. But if you size it wrong? You're drinking raw sewage. Let's fix that.

Flow Rate: Don't Be a Dumb Aussie

Your UV steriliser must handle your water flow. No excuses. If your pump does 10L/min and the unit only does 5L/min? You're screwed. It'll just spit out untreated water.

Dose Calculation: The Only Number That Matters

UV dose = UV intensity × exposure time. You need 40 mJ/cm² minimum for pathogens. If your dose is low? You're not sterilising. Period.

Calculation is simple:

Dose (mJ/cm²) = Flow Rate (L/min) × 1000 ÷ Steriliser Rating (L/min) × UV Intensity

Example: 8L/min flow, 10L/min steriliser. Dose = (8/10) × 1000 = 800 mJ/cm². That's way above 40. Good.

If your flow is 10L/min and the unit is 10L/min? Dose = 1000 mJ/cm². Still good. But if you're at 12L/min on a 10L/min unit? Dose = 833 mJ/cm². Still above 40? Maybe. But don't risk it.

Real talk: If your flow rate ever exceeds the steriliser's rating (even for a few minutes), you're not getting sterilised water. Get a bigger unit. Don't be cheap.

Bulb Life: Don't Wait for It to Die

UV bulbs degrade. After 9,000 hours (about 1 year of 24/7 use), they're useless. Most Aussie off-grid systems run 12-16 hours/day. So bulb life = 18-24 months.

Practical Tips (No Bull)

Australian Suppliers & Pricing (indicative prices)

Don't buy Chinese junk. Get Aussie-approved units.

WaterTech UV (Sydney-based)

Model: WT-10 (10L/min flow)

Price: $799 (includes bulb for first year)

Why: Reliable, local support. Bulb replacement $85.

Off Grid Solutions (Perth)

Model: OGS-12 (12L/min flow)

Price: $849

Why: Best for larger off-grid homes. Bulb $75.

UV Water Systems (Brisbane)

Model: UV-8 (8L/min flow)

Price: $699

Why: Budget option. Bulb $65. Good for small setups.

Don't pay $200 for a UV unit from eBay. It'll fail in 6 months. Spend the extra $200 now, save your life later.

Final word: Size for your max flow, replace bulbs yearly, pre-filter. That's it. No more. No less. If you do this, your water's safe. If you skip it? You'll be sick. And that's not Aussie.

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
