Forget the fancy marketing. If you're off-grid in Australia, your water filter needs to work hard, not cost you a fortune. Here's the straight stuff on the four stages you actually need.

Sediment Filter (Stage 1)

First stop. Catches sand, dirt, leaves, and that nasty green algae from dams. Without this, your next filters get clogged in days.

Carbon Filter (Stage 2)

Removes chlorine, chemicals, and that swampy taste. Essential if you're using town water or dam water.

UV Steriliser (Stage 3)

Kills bacteria, viruses, giardia. But it's useless if your water's cloudy. Sediment filter must come first.

UV won't remove heavy metals or salts. Pair it with RO if needed.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) (Stage 4)

Removes dissolved salts, fluoride, heavy metals. But it's slow, wasteful (3:1 water waste), and expensive.

Don't waste money on RO unless you have to. Most Aussie off-grid sites don't need it.

Practical Aussie Tips

Don't chain filters – UV needs clear water. Put sediment first, then carbon, then UV. RO is last if you use it.

Test your water first. If it's just muddy creek water, skip UV and RO. Sediment + carbon is enough. Test kits from ChemTest ($50) save you $500 in wasted gear.

UV needs power – run it off your solar battery. No power = no germ kill. Keep a spare bulb ($30-$50) in your shed.

RO is a headache – it wastes 3L water for every 1L clean. Only use if your water's undrinkable. Most off-grid Aussies don't need it.
