Homesteading Guide to Candle Making for Off-Grid Properties

I make my own candles to light the off‑grid place. Here’s what I reckon on waxes, wicks, moulds and the AUD price tag for Aussie homesteaders.

Why I make candles on my off‑grid block

Reliable lighting on a remote property isn’t optional. I make my own candles to control what goes into my home—no mystery chemicals. I once poured paraffin into a Bunnings jar without a thermometer, watching it crack the glass and waste the batch. Local beeswax cost me $22.50 a kilogram this harvest, but that price tag buys you a fuel you can trust. Before you start a batch, check your council’s fire‑safety rules.

I've spent years working with the same waxes, wicks, and moulds on my property, so here's what actually costs to set up in Australia.

Wax Types Compared

Beeswax

The premium choice for off-grid candles. Beeswax burns cleanly, produces no soot, and has a natural honey scent. It's the most sustainable option if you keep bees—or can source locally.

  • Cost: ~$25–$50 AUD per kg (bulk pellets cheaper)
  • Burn time: Longest of all waxes
  • Fragrance: Natural honey scent; holds added fragrances well
  • Tips: Requires a heat gun to smooth tops; harder to work with than soy

Soy Wax

A popular vegetable wax made from soybean oil. Soy wax is affordable, widely available, and burns cooler than paraffin. It's a renewable resource and cleans up with soap and water.

  • Cost: ~$15–$25 AUD per kg (flakes or pastilles)
  • Burn time: 30–50% longer than paraffin
  • Fragrance: Excellent scent throw (both hot and cold)
  • Tips: Use a double boiler; don't overheat above 85°C

Paraffin Wax

The traditional candle wax. Derived from petroleum, paraffin is the cheapest option and produces the strongest scent throw. It's widely available in craft stores.

  • Cost: ~$8–$15 AUD per kg
  • Burn time: Shorter than soy or beeswax
  • Fragrance: Best scent throw of all waxes
  • Considerations: Not eco-friendly; some health concerns with soot

Wick Selection

The wick is the engine of my candle. I pick the size that keeps the flame steady, so it doesn’t tunnel or drown.

  • Cotton wicks: The standard choice. Clean burning, no lead.
  • Zinc-core wicks: Self-trimming; great for container candles.
  • Wooden wicks: Create a crackling fire effect; popular for ambience.

Rule of thumb: The wick diameter should be roughly 1/3 the diameter of your candle. For a 7cm diameter container, use a 2–2.5cm wick. Always test—too large = smoking; too small = tunnelling.

Moulds and Containers for Off-Grid Candles

You can make two types of candles:

  • Pillar candles: Free-standing, require a mould (silicone, metal, or plastic)
  • Container candles: Poured into jars, tins, or shells—mould-free

For off-grid homesteaders, container candles are the easiest starting point. Use any heat-resistant jar: old mason jars, tin cans, or teacups work well. Collect your wax in a double boiler setup using a camp stove or wood fire.

Everything you need to get started: soy wax flakes, cotton wicks (assorted sizes), thermometer, and pouring jug.

My Scenting Approach for Off‑Grid Candles

For off-grid use, you have two approaches:

  • Essential oils: Natural but expensive. Tea tree, eucalyptus, and lavender are popular Australian options. Use 6–10% fragrance load (6–10g per 100g wax).
  • Fragrance oils: Broader range, stronger throw, cheaper per use. Choose high-quality oils designed for candle making.

Tip: Add fragrance at 70–75°C (when wax is fully melted but not super hot) for the best scent throw. Above 85°C, you lose fragrance to evaporation.

My Basic Soy Container Candle

  1. Prepare: Set wick in your container using a dab of hot wax or wick sticker. Centre the wick and hold it taut with a skewer across the top.
  2. Melt: Heat soy wax flakes in a double boiler to 70–75°C. Remove from heat.
  3. Fragrance: Add fragrance oil (6–10% of wax weight) and stir for 30 seconds.
  4. Pour: Carefully pour into your container. Leave 1cm headspace at top.
  5. Cure: Let cool for 24 hours before lighting. The cure improves scent throw.
  6. Trim: Trim wick to 5–6mm before each burn.

Essential Equipment

  • Double boiler: Two pots (one inside another) or a dedicated setup
  • Candy thermometer: Essential for monitoring wax temperature
  • Heat-resistant jug: For pouring melted wax cleanly
  • Wick holder: Skewers or chopsticks to hold wicks centred
  • Kitchen scale: For measuring wax and fragrance by weight

Wick Won’t Stay Lit: My Fixes

  • Tunnelling: Wick too small. Use a larger wick or add a second wick.
  • Sooting/smoking: Wick too large. Trim to 5mm or move to a cooler location.
  • Frosting (white bloom on soy): Normal—caused by temperature changes. Aesthetic only.
  • Sinking tops: Wax cooled too fast. Pour at 65°C or warmer second pour.
  • Poor scent throw: Fragrance added too hot (above 85°C) or too little (under 5%).

What is the best wax for homemade candles in Australia?

I'd start with soy wax if you're new to it — it's forgiving, pours cleanly and suits container candles well. Beeswax burns longer and smells lovely on its own, but you have to keep the pour temperature lower. The wax you pick changes your wick size and how much scent it holds, so it's worth weighing up before you buy a block.

Why does my homemade candle wick keep going out?

Most often the wick is too small for the container and the melt pool can't get hot enough to feed the flame. I'll try the next wick size up and make sure it's centred before the wax sets. Trimming the wick shorter and moving the candle out of draughts usually sorts it from there.
