“After my third generator died in a heatwave at 42 degrees, I learned that natural gas is just a lie for off-grid power.”

If you're connected to the gas grid (most suburbs are), and you want a generator for backup power during blackouts, here's the reality:
You need an active natural gas connection from your local utility (AGL, Origin, etc.). If you don't have gas in your home, you can't run a natural gas generator. Installing a gas line to your generator location costs $2,000-$5,000+ (and requires council approval). Don't even think about it if you're off-grid.
Before you plug anything in, call your gas provider. Tell them: "I'm installing a natural gas generator for backup power." They'll:
Blunt tip: If your gas provider says "no" or "not for backup," they're right. Most don't allow generators to run off the main line during outages (safety rule). You need a separate gas line from the meter to the generator.
Your gas meter will track the generator's usage. It's not free. Current gas prices (around $0.03-$0.04 per MJ) mean:
Real talk: If you're paying $150+ for gas to run a generator during a blackout, you're better off with a $2,000 solar system + battery. It's cheaper long-term.
Only relevant if you're grid-connected. Don't waste cash if you're off-grid.
Generators (Natural Gas):
Gas line installation (if needed): $2,500-$6,000 (licensed gas fitter + council fees). Not optional.
If you're off-grid: Forget natural gas generators. They're a pipe dream. Your options:
Stop reading about natural gas generators for off-grid. It's a dead end. Get a solar quote from Solar.com.au or EnergySaver. It's cheaper, quieter, and actually works off-grid.
End of story.
