Propane Systems for Off-Grid Aussie Living: Get It Right First Time

Propane is the lifeline for off-grid living in Australia. But if you install it wrong, you're asking for a fire. Here's the blunt truth.

Step sequence for installing an off-grid propane system with clearance and safety requirements.

Tank Selection: Don't Be a Dumb Arse

45kg tank = your sweet spot. 100kg is overkill unless you're running a whole farm. Bigger tanks cost more to fill and are a pain to move. Get a 45kg. Done.

Cost: $400-$800 (including delivery). Suppliers: Caltex, BP, or Propane Australia. Don't buy from the guy selling "cheap" tanks off Facebook – they're dangerous.

Tip: Mount the tank upright on a concrete pad, 3m from any building or ignition source. No exceptions. If it's not level, it'll leak.

Piping: No Plastic, Ever

Use only copper or stainless steel flex pipe. Plastic? You're inviting a fire. Keep runs short – no more than 10m from tank to appliances. Sharp bends = leaks.

Cost: $50-$150 for a basic kit (fittings included). Get it from Plumb Centre or Bunnings. Don't buy the $10 plastic stuff from eBay – it's a joke.

Tip: Test every joint with soapy water after installation. If bubbles form, you've got a leak. Fix it before you light a match.

Regulators: The Safety Catch

Two-stage regulator only. One stage for tank pressure, one for appliance pressure. And it must have a built-in safety shut-off. If it doesn't, walk away. Now.

Cost: $150-$300. Suppliers: Gas & Fuel or Propane Australia. Don't cheap out – $200 for a proper regulator is cheaper than a fire.

Tip: If your regulator doesn't have a shut-off, it's a fire waiting to happen. Pay the extra $50 and get the safe one.

Safety: Non-Negotiable

Smell gas? Turn off the tank immediately. Open windows. Get out. Do not flick switches. Ever. Install a gas detector ($50-$100 from Bunnings) and test it monthly.

Keep the tank in a shaded, well-ventilated spot. Never weld near it. Never store flammable stuff nearby.

Tip: If you're not 100% sure about any part, get a licensed gasfitter. $200-$500 for a pro to do it right is cheaper than your house burning down.

Final Word

Propane works great off-grid if you don't cut corners. Tank: 45kg. Piping: copper/stainless only. Regulator: two-stage with shut-off. Safety: no compromises. Do it right, or don't bother. Simple as that.

Prices are approximate (2023). Always get quotes from local suppliers. No fluff. Just propane, done properly.

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Working with electrical systems, structural modifications, or gas installations carries inherent risks. If you are not confident in your abilities, always engage a licensed professional.

When to Call a Professional

While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:

Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
