Real pricing, honest sourcing, and application rates that actually work, no marketing fluff. Start with compost, add lime for acid soil, and build from there.
I keep a clinical eye on what works in the soil as much as in a sickroom. Four amendments earn their place in any off-grid Aussie garden: compost, manure, bone meal, and rock minerals. What follows is real pricing, honest sourcing, and application rates that won't waste your time or your soil. No fluff, no nonsense.

“After losing three tomato crops to aluminium toxicity in my clay soil, I learned that one tonne of crushed oyster shells per hectare is the only amendment that sticks in the bush.”
I'm over the marketing spin. Here's what works in an off‑grid Aussie garden. Compost, manure, bone meal and rock minerals — current pricing, where to source them, and how much to spread. Plain talk, hard‑won.
Match your soil to the right amendment using the table. Prices are current AUD from Australian suppliers (as of June 2024). All products are available via Amazon Australia with our affiliate tag.
| Amendment | What It Is | Best For | Application Rate (per m²) | Cost (AUD) | AU Supplier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compost | Decomposed garden scraps & food waste | Overall soil structure, water retention | 2-5cm layer, dug in | $15-$30 (50L bag) | Bunnings |
| Chicken Manure (aged) | Dried chicken droppings | Nitrogen boost, fast growth | 1-2 cups per plant, mixed in | $10-$20 (2kg bag) | Amazon Australia |
| Bone Meal | Ground animal bones | Root development, flowering | 1-2 tbsp per plant, mixed in | $8-$15 (250g) | Amazon Australia |
| Rock Minerals (Basalt Dust) | Crushed volcanic rock | Trace elements, long-term health | 100g per m², mixed in | $20-$40 (5kg bag) | Amazon Australia |
Compost is non-negotiable. Make your own from kitchen scraps and garden waste. Saves money, reduces landfill. Bunnings sells cheap compost bins ($35-$50) - get one.
Chicken manure? Only aged. Fresh manure burns plants. Buy aged from local farms or Bunnings. Never use cow/pig manure - it's full of weeds and pathogens.
Bone meal is for specific needs only. Use it when planting bulbs or fruit trees. Don't sprinkle it everywhere - it attracts animals and can cause nutrient imbalances.
Rock minerals are for long game. Add 100g/m² once a year. Mix into soil before planting. Basalt dust is best - it's Australian-sourced and won't leach like some imports.
Test your soil first. $15 test kit from Amazon Australia. Don't waste money on amendments you don't need.
Compost and rock minerals are the backbone of any off-grid patch I've worked. Bone meal and manure earn their keep as targeted supplements, not the main feed. As for the pricey organic-branded products on the shelf—same result, bigger bill, and most homesteader budgets can't stretch that far.
While many off-grid projects are achievable as DIY, certain situations require licensed professionals:
Always check local regulations and obtain necessary permits before commencing work.
