By Dave Miller · off-grid sparky · 22 years wiring solar, batteries and sheds in central QLD
“After two years of cloudy central Queensland winters, I've learned that a camera's 10-hour battery claim vanishes in a week without a dedicated 200Ah lithium bank.”

No point in a security cam if it dies in week one. Here's how to make it last on your off-grid property. No bullshit.
Put it where the sun hits it all day. Not under a tree. Not behind a shed. If it's shaded for more than 2 hours daily, it'll die in winter.
Mount it high (2.5m+). Not on the fence where kangaroos can knock it over. Not facing the road where cars block the sun. Aim for north-facing if you're in Australia. South? You're screwed.
Don't point it at the back of your house. Point it at the gate, the shed, the stockyard. That's where thieves come. Not your laundry line.
Cloud storage? For $20/month? In the bush? You're kidding. Off-grid means no internet. So get a camera with local storage.
Look for 128GB+ microSD card support. That's 30 days of 1080p footage at 15fps. Cheaper than paying for cloud. And if the power dies, it keeps recording.
Tip: Buy a 128GB SanDisk Extreme Pro card. $50. Don't skimp on the card. A $20 card will fail in 3 months.
Australian Supplier: AUSCAM (auscam.com.au)
$249 for the SolarCam Pro with 128GB card included. No cloud, no BS.
Set it to ignore kangaroos, birds, and wind. Not all cameras do this. Get one with AI-based detection.
Ignore: Animals under 20kg. Ignore: Movement under 5m. Only trigger for humans or vehicles. Otherwise you'll get 50 false alarms a day.
Don't use "sensitivity" sliders. They're useless. Set zones: Only watch the gate, not the whole yard. Saves battery.
Blunt tip: If your camera triggers for a possum, it's useless. Test it with a cat first. If it alarms, bin it.
Don't buy a $150 camera from Amazon. It'll die in 6 months. Australian suppliers have warranty support. If it fails, you can call them. Not some overseas call centre.
Australian Supplier: Solaris (solaris.com.au)
$320 for the SolarCam 2 with 60W solar panel + 128GB card. Best value. Works in the Outback.
Final word: If your camera needs a 200W solar panel to run, it's overkill. Get one that runs on 50-100W. That's all you need for a small property.
