String Fusing: Don't Be a Dummy

Every string needs its own fuse. Period. No exceptions. If you skip this, your expensive panels get fried when a string shorts. Simple as that.

Use 15A or 20A DC fuses (depending on your panel specs). Must be DC-rated – not AC. Cheap AC fuses blow when they shouldn't. You'll regret it when your system dies at 3am.

Practical tip: Buy fuses from a proper solar supplier. Don't grab random fuses from Bunnings. They'll fail. Get the right ones.

Bus Bars: Keep It Tight

Bus bars are where you connect all your strings. Use solid copper – no aluminium. Aluminium corrodes, gets loose, and causes fires. We've seen it happen.

Get a 4-6 way bus bar. Enough for 4-6 strings. If you're doing more, get two boxes. Never cram strings into a single bus bar. It's a fire hazard.

Practical tip: Tighten terminals to 1.5-2 Nm torque. Use a torque screwdriver. Don't just guess. Loose terminals = hot spots = fire.

Surge Protection: Don't Skip This

Lightning? Bushfire? Grid surge? Your system needs a surge protector. It's not optional. Not even for off-grid. We've seen panels melt from a nearby lightning strike.

Use a DC surge protector rated for 1500V. Must be installed between the combiner box and the charge controller. Not after it. You'll waste money.

Practical tip: Install it on the positive bus bar. Right after the fuses. That's the only place it works.

Australian Suppliers & Pricing (indicative prices)

Combiner Boxes: Solaris (Sydney) – $120-$180 for 4-6 way. No bullshit. Get the one with built-in fuses. Don't buy cheap Chinese boxes from eBay. They're dangerous.

DC Fuses: Solar Wholesale (Melbourne) – $8-$12 each (15A DC). Get a pack of 6. $50 total. Bunnings sells AC fuses for $10 – don't buy them.

Surge Protectors: Victron (Nationwide) – $150-$200. Must be DC-rated. Skip the $50 "surge" devices on eBay. They're useless.

Bus Bars: Solaris – $35 for 6-way copper. $20 for aluminium (don't buy this). Copper is worth the extra $15.

Final Tip: Wire the combiner box before you mount it. Don't try to do it on the roof. You'll drop a screw, lose your temper, and end up with a mess. Do it on the ground. Test it with a multimeter first. If it's not 100% right, don't connect it to the panels.
